Driven: 2012 Honda Odyssey
This year, Vehicle Magazine choose the Honda Odyssey as one of its ten All-Stars, the only minivan to make the list. It’s not hard to see why the Odyssey would be so flattered, but it’s really my least pet minivan to drive.
Top-notch powertrain
The Odyssey On the road Elite gets the best fuel nation of any minivan, at 19/28 mpg. (The LX, EX, and EX-L Odyssey models, which have a five-speed automatic rather than six-speed, are rated at a still-impressive 18/27 mpg). At the same time, and despite its 248-hp power rating being the lowest in the segment, the 3.5-liter V-6 provides peppy acceleration. The six-speed automatic works well. Chassis tuning is also pretty excellent, with no notable floatiness.
Bum steer
So what’s the conundrum? It’s the steering, which is just dreadful. It’s ridiculously overboosted, imprecise, and really feels sloppy. Instead of building up as you wind on more lock, efforts really decrease. The Odyssey steering is easily the worst of any minivan, and makes herding this van down the road a chore. It doesn’t have to be this way; in fact, at one time the Odyssey was known for its stuck-up steering. Those days are gone.
Lacking luxe
Speaking of disappointment, we also could have a word about the interior. Considering that my test example was a $44,000 top-of-the-line model, the workaday interior design and materials were a letdown. Gray plastic trim does small to enliven the massive dash, and it takes longer than it should to find what you’re looking for in the sea of black buttons in the center stack area. Leather is standard (naturally), but it could nearly pass for the fake stuff, and there’s plenty of hard plastic on the dash and door panels.
Kid friendly
Of course, most minivan buyers get one because they have kids, and kids will like the Odyssey. The high-end version has an ultra-wide (16 inchs) flip-down video screen; even more impressive, it has split-screen capability, so siblings don’t have to agree on what to watch. The Odyssey is one of only two minivans (the Sienna is the other) that offer eight-passenger seats, so one more friend can come along. The rear seats are quite comfortable, and third-row space is generous. Unlike Chrysler minivans, but, Honda rear passengers are denied seat heaters; perhaps the thinking is that sitting on cold seats builds character.
Does pouring this bus also build character? Probably not, but it’s beyond doubt one more example of something parents only do for their kids.

More than 30 cars and 70 years of automotive history pulled out of the News-Journal Center’s parking lot Friday morning.
The classic-car aficionados were pouring in the Fields Classic Motorsports Tour, a group drive from Daytona Beach to St. Augustine. The tour marks the start of today’s Art of the Vehicle — A Lifestyle Event, now in its second year in downtown Daytona Beach.
“We see it as a nice small kickoff to the event,” said Matt Hoffman, organizer of the tour.
Hoffman, of Fields BMW of Daytona, said he hopes to see the tour become an annual car rally.
The cars ranged in age from a 1939 Ford Deluxe, hot-rodded up in red with yellow flames, to the lead car, a sleek 2012 Fisker Karma hybrid. They ranged in muscle from a clutch of burly, candy-colored Corvettes from the ’60s through the ’80s to a bronze 1976 AMC Pacer.
Gill Pepitone, Coral Springs, said the oft-maligned nation car has only 40,000 miles on it and sees the tour as a shakedown run for a intended summer cross-people trip.
The longest, widest, most-photographed car was a red-and-white 1960 Buick LaSabre convertible belonging to Tony Cassata of Ormond Beach.
“There’s more steel in the front fender of this car than there is the whole of a 2012 car,” he said. Restoring it was a two-year labor of like.
Cassata said he was looking forwards to pouring the car to St. Augustine with the top down all the way. “You wouldn’t believe how this car drives,” he said. “It floats.”
After the tour, many of the car buffs dressed up and returned to the News-Journal Center to party with other car enthusiasts at the Thunder Ball gala. A crew from “Muscle Car Exercises” was slated to film at the event.

Car finance website Car Loan 4U offers top tips for new young drivers hitting the roads this summer
The UK’s leading car finance website Car Loan 4U offers top tips on summer pouring for young new road users.
(PRWEB UK) 2 May 2012
New drivers who have recently passed their test might be taking to the roads during summer pouring conditions for the first time.
Apprehension may strike the hearts of older British motorists at this time of year as young drivers often take to the roads more often during the summer months. Not only are those who have recently passed exercising their new found freedom, but a number of teens may also take pouring lessons during the summer when they have more time.
Car Loan 4U offer top tips on how to arrange for summer pouring.
Car Loan 4U Co-Director Ryan Dignan comments;
“For inexperienced drivers, having excitable young friends in the vehicle as passengers can be a major distraction. Road casualties are typically lower in the summer than in the winter*, but, it is still vital for young drivers to learn the value of motoring safety during all ride out conditions. That’s why we have place together some simple tips that all new and inexperienced drivers may wish to follow when pouring this summer.”
Top tips for young drivers over the summer
1. Concentrate on pouring
Blearing music and noisy passengers can all prove to be serious distractions for young drivers. Inexperienced drivers will need to concentrate heavily as they might not be used to pouring with passengers. Mobile phones, mp3 players and loud music can also distract young drivers from the roads so it would be advisable to switch all portable devices off. It is illegal to use a mobile phone whilst pouring.
2. Speed control
Under peer pressure, young drivers might feel the need to speed. This is perilous as it puts the driver and passengers’ lives at risk. Peer pressure can cause young motorists to make risky and reckless decisions. Speed and inexperience on the roads are a deadly combination.
3. Drugs and Drink
All motorists should avoid pouring under the shape of alcohol and/or drugs. Judgements, reaction speeds and co-ordination movements are skewed under the shape of alcohol. Illegal drug use while pouring could seriously result in a fatal accident. Both should be avoided at all costs.
Whether you’re new to the roads or an experienced driver; if you’re looking for a new car, Car Loan 4U offers competitive interest rates start from just 7.9% APR.

Landing a car loan is getting easier
Financing a new vehicle has gotten simpler again, mainly on larger vehicles.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — If you’re going shopping for a new car we have excellent news for you. You can now get a car loan even if your credit rating isn’t perfect.
Car lending has finally returned to more-or-less normal after a few years in which auto lending went from crazy-simple to crazy-hard. Before the fiscal crisis, it seemed that anyone could get a car loan regardless of their credit history or income.
“They were pretty much lending to anyone with a pulse,” said Jesse Toprak, an industry analyst with Truecar.com.
Then, once the crisis hit, it was just the opposite. It was hard to get a car loan even with stellar credit and impossible to get one without it.
Now, people with excellent credit can once again borrow money to buy a new car. Even those who’ve slipped up a small can get money to buy a car, providing they’re willing to pay a higher interest rate.
“I don’t reckon you need to have the 800-plus FICO score that was probably necessary in 2009,” said Alec Gutierrez, an industry analyst with Kelley Blue Book.
Low interest rates on all types of loans are obviously part of the reason auto loans are simpler and cheaper to get, said Gutierrez, but the tight market for used cars helps, too.
Used cars are in small supply these days, so excellent used cars are worth a lot. That means even if things come out terribly and the financing company has to repossess your car and sell it as a used car, they’ll at least get excellent money for it.
So sub-prime loans, those “risky” loans made to people with relatively low credit scores who are most likely to default and have their rides repossessed, are now possible.
“The subprime market has come back to life, where it was non-existent a few years ago,” said Dave Wescott, president of Westcott Automotive, Burlington, NC and vice-chairman of the National Vehicle Dealers Association.
Lenders are now willing to look past the simple credit score number and premeditated the reasons for missed payments, said Toprak. Maybe having missed a couple of mortgage payments won’t sink your chances.
“Having looked at over 5,000 loan applications, credit score is not the best indicator of people’s ability to repay,” said Toprak who formerly operated auto dealership financing departments.
That’s mainly right now, when many have had distress making mortgage payments, said Toprak. A person’s income is really being considered by auto financers, he said, whereas they might not have even looked at that in the past.
Still, not everybody is being that thorough. Car buyers might still have to shop around a small to find the best rate, he said.
Experts usually recommend shopping for auto financing even before you start seriously shopping for a new car. Going into the dealership with a competitive auto financing deal in hand provides an incentive for the dealer to work hard to beat it.
In most cases, the dealership will be able to grant the best financing deal, given that auto dealers have access to special loan rates provided by auto finance companies affiliated with automakers.
Rates are particularly excellent on pickups and SUVs, vehicles that aren’t promotion as they once did, said Gutierrez. All-purpose Motors, for instance, is offering 0% financing for 72 months on the soon-to-be-discontinued Avalanche truck.
That rate is, of course, available only to “qualified buyers.” ![]()
